Confederate Monument

Savannah

What you'll hear here: about a minute on Confederate Monument — how it came to be, who it mattered to, and what to look for while you're standing in front of it.

Ahead in Forsyth Park you'll see the Civil War Memorial, a forty-eight-foot shaft topped by a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier, flanked by two bronze busts of officers and ringed by a railing, one of only two such railings left in the city. Dedicated in 1875, it honored Confederate soldiers who died in the war. After the Unite the Right rally in August 2017, the city renamed and rededicated the structure in 2018.
