Congregation Mickve Israel

Savannah

What you'll hear here: about a minute on Congregation Mickve Israel — the story behind what you're looking at, playing hands-free as you arrive.

Congregation Mickve Israel faces Monterey Square at 20 East Gordon Street, its Hebrew name meaning Congregation for the Hope of Israel. It was organized in 1735 by mostly Sephardic Jewish immigrants of Spanish-Portuguese extraction, who came from London and arrived in the new colony in 1733 — making it one of the oldest congregations in the United States. The synagogue you see was consecrated in 1878, in the Gothic Revival style, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property of the Savannah Historic District.
