Your walk brings you to Chippewa Square's monument honoring James Oglethorpe, founder of the Province of Georgia, who established Savannah in 1733. Efforts to build it began in 1901, led by the city's patriotic societies, who helped secure federal funds. The bronze statue of Oglethorpe was designed by Daniel Chester French, set atop a granite pedestal by Henry Bacon.
It was dedicated in 1910 before a crowd of several thousand.
