You're inside the Savannah Historic District now, tracing the city's pre-Civil War limits. Declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1966, it's among the largest community-wide historic districts in the country. Its design follows the Oglethorpe Plan, begun in 1733 at the city's founding — a grid built around wards, each with a central square ringed by four trust lots and four tythings.
