Out in the Savannah River, just north of downtown, sits Hutchinson Island. It forms where the Back River breaks away to the north. For much of its history its land was industrial, supporting the Port of Savannah — one of the busiest container ports in the world.
The island runs roughly seven miles long and about a mile across at its widest.
