Freemasons' Hall went up in 1876 as the Savannah Cotton Exchange. Here cotton factors, the brokers who served the planters, gathered to set the market value of cotton bound for New York and London. As the century closed, factorage declined, with more planters selling inland, and the cotton exchange finally closed in 1951.
