Red brick links Centennial Hall to almost every building on the University of Arizona campus, the auditorium Roy Place designed. When it opened in 1937 it presented musical programs and stage plays to the student community and the general public, and served as a general lecture hall. From 1947 to 1984 this room hosted the Tucson Sunday Evening Forum, bringing figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Jackie Robinson, and Walter Cronkite into this very space.
An extensive renovation in 1985, costing over $4 million, reshaped the hall and renamed it to honor the university's 100th anniversary. Today the theatre is operated by UApresents, the university's professional performing arts component; UApresents brings theatre, dance, spoken word, classical, jazz and world music to Southern Arizona and continues to host university lectures. And in 2010 the Broadway in Tucson series announced it would bring the smash Broadway hit Wicked to Tucson.
Notice the familiar red brick exterior that ties this hall to nearly every building on the wider campus.
