Red brick rises at 1526–1536 East 7th Avenue, where El Centro Español de Tampa has anchored Spanish immigrant life in Ybor City since 1912. Built in 1912 as an ethnic and cultural clubhouse, this building once anchored Spanish immigrant social life and today survives amid a shopping and entertainment complex. You can still read its significance in the brick and proportions: it is one of the few surviving structures specific to Spanish immigration to the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
That legacy earned the building recognition as a U.S. National Historic Landmark on June 3, 1988—one of only two individual structures in Hillsborough County so designated. As early as 1974 it was listed by the National Register of Historic Places as a Contributing Property within the Ybor City Historic District; the district itself gained National Historic Landmark District status on December 4, 1990. Today the address houses Jason Fernandez's restaurant Carne.
