Palm Avenue meets 14th Street at El Círculo Cubano de Tampa, also known as the Cuban Club. This is the 1917 building designed by Tampa architect M. Leo Elliott, raised to replace an earlier structure that burned down and to serve the Cuban immigrants who made Ybor City their home. Imagine a place built not only for meetings but for life: its theater once hosted performances, and the club included a bowling alley, spa, pharmacy, ballroom, library, and cantina.
The décor announces its ambitions — imported tile, stained glass, scraffito spandrels, and murals speak of skill, pride, and connection to craft. The organization itself reaches back: an earlier club founded October 10, 1899 changed its name in 1902 to El Círculo Cubano, establishing the mutual aid mission this building continues. Recognized for its significance, it was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1972, and honored by the AIA’s Florida Chapter on April 18, 2012 as Cuban Club, Ybor City.
