Steel and light make the Beacon of Hope, a columnar monument in Stiles Circle Park that can throw a green or white beam straight into the sky. Up close you can feel its clean verticality and imagine the shaft of green or white light that can project directly up into the sky. That light is meant to symbolize the healing nature of the nearby University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and it shares sightlines with the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce headquarters.
From here the Beacon is visible from Interstate 235 and from downtown Oklahoma City; it marks a point of connection between the medical campus and the city beyond. Stiles Park, thought to be the oldest park in Oklahoma City, was sold in 2022 to a city developer as part of the new Convergence Campus development. The park is currently under construction and set to reopen in January 2025.
The beam’s strength is purported to be 1 billion candle power and able to extend up to 5,498 feet, though that claim has been questioned. Notice the column's beam climbing toward the sky, its claimed reach of 5,498 feet linking this reopened park to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, the School of Science and Mathematics, and the Department of Commerce beyond.
