Picture a brick Colonial Revival library rising at 34 Mount Desert Street, a 1910 gift to the town. This architecturally distinguished Colonial Revival building was built in 1910–11 and donated to the community by Mrs. Morris K. Jesup in memory of her late husband; both were longtime summer residents of the area. In 1991 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture.
Notice the single-story brick massing and the slate hip roof; the front facade is five bays wide, with a centered entrance recessed in a limestone arch and flanked by paired pilasters. Above the doorway is a medallion depicting an open book, and the flanking bays show sash windows topped by rounded limestone panels with bullseye insets. Look up at the modillioned roof cornice and the pair of chimneys that rise from the interior.
The windows on the sides echo the front’s treatment, and an ell extending from the center of the rear gives the building its T shape. You'll find this library on the south side of Mount Desert Street, Maine State Route 3, just a block from Bar Harbor's village green.
