Old Goler is the local name for Goler Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at 630 Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Built in 1918–1919, this rectangular brick building announces its style in stone and glass: a Late Gothic Revival presence on the street. Ahead of you is the gable-front block, flanked on either side by the two square brick towers that frame the entrance.
Look up and you will see the stained glass windows set into the brickwork, coloring the light inside. A two-story annex, added in 1946, joins the original form, a clear marker of the congregation’s growth over time. You should know that in 1942 the Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church congregation split from this church, a recorded moment in its story.
In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, this house of worship was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Picture the twin brick towers flanking the gable-front block, and the stained glass coloring the light within.
