Art Deco lines climb 314 feet at the Reynolds Building, 51 East 4th Street in Winston-Salem. Feel the weight of its history: completed in 1929 at a cost of $2.7 million (about $36.3 million in 2016 dollars), it rises 21 floors and contains 313,996 square feet (29,171.2 m2) of space. For much of its life it served as headquarters for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, a presence you can almost sense in the scale and dignity of the tower.
The site itself has civic roots: this corner of Fourth and Main once held Winston’s first city hall, built in 1892 and used as the first Winston-Salem city hall after the 1913 merger with the town of Salem, until a larger hall was needed and the old one torn down. More recently the building was sold to PMC Property Group in 2014 and underwent an estimated $60 million in renovations. In March 2016 The Residences @ the R.J. Reynolds Building opened on the top 11 floors; the first six floors opened as the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in April, and Katharine Brasserie & Bar, named for Katharine Smith Reynolds, followed in May.
