Markland, the Andrew Anderson House, is a coquina mansion in St. Augustine, Florida. This coquina shellstone residence was begun in 1839 by New York doctor Andrew Anderson Sr., and it was built in the Greek Revival style of Classical Revival architecture. Anderson had first arrived in St. Augustine in 1829 with his wife and two daughters, but he died in a yellow fever epidemic just after beginning construction on the original part of the house.
Over the years the property stayed in the Anderson family: Dr. Andrew Anderson Jr. sold a portion of land east of the residence in 1887 to Henry M. Flagler for construction of the Ponce de León Hotel. Dr. Anderson Jr. died in 1924. The house later passed from the mayor, Herbert E. Wolfe, who sold it to Flagler College in 1966.
Markland remains owned by Flagler College and was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1978. Picture Dr. Andrew Anderson selling land east of here to Henry Flagler, land that became the Ponce de León Hotel down King Street.
