Flagler College is a private liberal arts campus here in St. Augustine. The school was founded in 1968 and today offers 44 undergraduate majors and two master's programs. For a time it also operated the Flagler College – Tallahassee Campus from 2000 to 2024.
The campus spreads across 49 acres (200,000 m2), whose centerpiece is the Ponce de León Hotel, built in 1888 as a luxury hotel. Its architects, John Carrere and Thomas Hastings, created this building for Henry Morrison Flagler, the industrialist, oil magnate and railroad pioneer; the hotel is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Lawrence Lewis Jr. was the driving force behind Flagler's development: chairman of Flagler's board of trustees for more than 20 years, he guided the college through a reorganization in 1971 and directed millions of dollars through foundations, family and personal funds into new construction, restoration, endowment and other programs to ensure Flagler's continued success.
