Built in 1976, the U.S. Bank Center in front of you reached 407 feet (124 m) into the Phoenix skyline and became the second tallest building in Arizona. The tower’s story begins with a 1973 design by Thomas F. Marshall while he worked for the Tulsa firm Kelley‑Marshall & Associates. In 1974 Marshall formed his own firm, Thomas F. Marshall Associates, and the project included associate architect Schoenberger, Straub, Florence & Associates of Phoenix and consulting architects Varney, Sexton, Sydnor Associates.
Ground was broken in 1974 and the tower rose under the care of the M. M. Sundt Construction Company of Phoenix. By 1975, when the building was roughly half complete, the Del E. Webb Realty & Management Company, a subsidiary of the Del E. Webb Corporation, was named leasing and property manager; the Webb firm also served as project manager to Sundt in the final year. When it opened it served as headquarters for Arizona Bancwest, parent company of The Arizona Bank, which had moved from a building at Monroe Street and First Avenue.
