Union Pacific Center rises 317 feet at 1400 Douglas Street, the downtown Omaha headquarters of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Corporation since June 2004. Officially opened in June 2004, this tower rises 317 feet (97 m), making it the fifth-tallest building in Omaha. Its presence answers a decision first announced in April 1999, when Union Pacific Corporation, then based in Dallas, Texas, said it would move its headquarters back to Omaha.
The company’s original Omaha headquarters was built in 1910 and hadn’t been expanded since 1971, and by June 2001 plans for a new 19-floor building were in place: roughly 1,100,000 square feet (0.10 km2) at an estimated cost of $260 million. The move also meant consolidating employees from ten locations around Omaha and absorbing around 700 customer service jobs from St. Louis, Missouri. Before this tower rose, the site had been home to the Rialto Theater, demolished in 1986 to make a parking lot; the remaining buildings were cleared in December 2001.
