Cast-in-place concrete carries the First National Bank Tower up 45 stories and 634 feet, the tallest completed building in Omaha and all of Nebraska. Rising to 634 feet (193 m) and 45 stories, this building became the tallest in Omaha and the state when it overtook the nearby 30-story WoodmenLife Tower upon its completion. Construction began in April 1999 and lasted until 2002, and that completion earned attention through ACEC and Emporis awards.
The tower and its parking garage were built with heavy use of cast-in-place concrete, a fact that speaks to the solidity you feel underfoot. Step closer and imagine the interior volumes: a winter garden and the original facade of the Medical Arts Building were preserved as part of the design after the Medical Arts Building was torn down to make space. The story of this site stretches back farther — in the 1970s the bank outgrew its original headquarters and began drafting plans for a new home, and in 1997 Leo A Daly was chosen to design it while Kiewit Corporation served as general contractor.
Today it still stands as the tallest completed building in Nebraska, even as the core of the under-construction Mutual of Omaha Headquarters Tower surpassed it in 2025. Notice the preserved facade of the old Medical Arts Building tucked inside the tower's winter garden.
