Lynhurst is the official name and Joslyn Castle the local nickname for the 35-room Scottish Baronial home George and Sarah Joslyn built in 1903 at 3902 Davenport Street. This Scottish Baronial mansion was built in 1903; its 35 rooms rise across four stories. The house sits within formal gardens and greenhouses that were completed in 1899, and the carriage house tower you can see was built before the Castle in 1901.
The grounds began to take shape after George Joslyn bought a farm outside Omaha in 1893 and started landscaping. George Joslyn made his fortune in the ready-print news business as owner of the Western Newspaper Union, and the Joslyns contributed widely in Omaha — Sarah Joslyn’s donation helped make the Joslyn Art Museum possible. The house was designed by local architect John McDonald, while landscape architect Jens Jensen planned the grounds and fashioned the rock work and pools for the conservatory inside the house.
The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was designated an Omaha landmark in 1979. Notice the carriage house tower, raised in 1901, and the gardens Jens Jensen shaped around this castle.
