Dry goods and hardware once filled the Steiner–Lobman and Teague Hardware Buildings ahead of you in Montgomery, Alabama. The story carved into these walls begins with two businessmen, Louis Steiner and Nathan Lobman, who built this block circa 1891 to house their dry goods store. By 1895 the southern half had a new steward: William Martin Teague, who made it the home of the Teague Hardware Company. Those two enterprises, and the families behind them, kept hold of these buildings as late as the 1970s, anchoring generations of local business life. In time this pair of buildings gained formal recognition; they were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 31, 1979.
