Troy University's satellite campus in Montgomery is where you find the Rosa Parks Museum. This small but powerful museum collects information, exhibits, and artifacts tied to the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and honors civil rights activist Rosa Parks, known for refusing to surrender her seat to a white person on a city bus. Step inside in your imagination: the museum offers interactive activities and even a reenactment of what happened on the bus, staged as if you were outside the bus watching.
You will see artifacts from the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and an on-exhibit bus identical to the actual vehicle involved — though the bus on which the incident occurred is on display at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The Rosa Parks Museum matters to this city because it exhibits events from the civil rights era in Alabama; one of the reasons the museum was built was the boycott itself. Troy University wanted to dedicate their new library and museum to Rosa Parks, “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” and the library carries her name.
