Riverfront Plaza is taking shape here, a public area and green space under construction on the St. Johns River in Downtown Jacksonville. This is the midpoint of the 2-mile Northbank Riverwalk, just west of the Main Street Bridge, and this very property was home to the Jacksonville Landing from 1987 to 2019. After the Landing was demolished in July 2019, the site inspired numerous redevelopment ideas and extended discussions.
A winning plan by Perkins & Will was identified in late July 2021, and agreement was finally reached so construction could begin. Work started in July 2023, nearly four years after the Landing property was cleared. The first job, Phase 1A, began in July 2023: crews removed part of Independent Drive and rerouted traffic to Hogan Street, a phase completed in late 2023.
Phase 1B began in January 2024 and calls for replacing the bulkhead on the St. Johns River and the Riverwalk itself, then constructing a pavilion building with a playground for children on top. The last part of Phase 1 is an event lawn, a large grass area for concerts and festivals. Picture the finished Riverwalk stretching toward the Main Street Bridge and imagine what comes next for you.
