At 617 feet, the Bank of America Tower rises at the northwest corner of Bay and Laura streets, the tallest building in Jacksonville. At 617 feet (188 m), this reinforced-concrete tower is the tallest building in Jacksonville, the 25th-tallest in Florida, and the tallest in the state outside the Miami metropolitan area. Its 42 floors were completed in 1990 as the Barnett Center, built to serve as the headquarters of Barnett Bank.
The tower’s name tells a story of change: after Barnett Bank was acquired by NationsBank, the name became NationsBank Tower in 1998; when NationsBank was then acquired by Bank of America, the building took its present name in 1999. The structure was designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn and was erected on the site of the Heard National Bank Building, which had itself been the tallest structure in Florida for twelve years. Ownership moved again when Group RMC purchased the property from Hertz Investment Group in 2020.
