Trinity Episcopal Church has held this spot on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio, since 1866. This is the building the city remembers as being built in 1866 and later honored on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Step closer and you’ll notice a modern story woven into the old stone: a stained glass window called "The Church in the World," installed in 1965, that turns the glass itself into a map of local life.
The window depicts a former Columbus flag, Ohio Stadium, the Ohio Statehouse, the LeVeque Tower, John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the Main Library, and the statue of Christopher Columbus formerly at City Hall. To your side the church’s adjoining parish house tells another chapter: designed by Howell & Thomas and built in 1910, it gained another story in 1976, a quiet record of growth beside the older sanctuary. The church’s place on Capitol Square ties these dates and details together — 1866, 1910, 1965, 1976 — as visible layers in the fabric of the block.
