Broad and High Streets, the city's 100 percent corner, frame the 10-acre Capitol Grounds of Capitol Square, the heart of Downtown Columbus, where you're now walking. The Ohio Statehouse is the oldest building on Capitol Square, the center of the state government and roughly the geographic center of Capitol Square, Columbus and Ohio. The Capitol Grounds are framed to the north and west by Broad and High Streets — the main thoroughfares of the city since its founding that form the city's 100 percent corner — and by 3rd Street to the east and State Street to the south.
These grounds were donated by four prominent Franklinton landholders to form the new state capitol. In the mid-20th century, downtown began to empty, and then a construction boom in the 1970s and 80s brought nearly all spaces back into use. Plans aimed to have the last empty space on 3rd Street developed by 2020.
