Built during the skyscraper boom of the 1920s and 1930s and completed in 1927, it was the second-tallest building in the world when finished. From its completion until 1964 it stood as the tallest building in North America outside New York City, and it remained the tallest building in Ohio until Key Tower was completed in 1991; it is still the state's second-tallest.
The tower is part of the Tower City Center mixed-use development. Major tenants have included Forest City Enterprises, which maintained its corporate headquarters there until 2018, and the Riverside Company. Ownership has shifted: Forest City Realty Trust owned it from 1983 until K&D Group purchased it on September 15, 2016 for $38.5 million (equivalent to $49.2 million in 2024).
