High ground off North Avenue holds Lakeview Cemetery, the rural cemetery Burlington created in 1867 in Chittenden County, Vermont. Created in 1867 and dedicated in 1871, this city-owned, non-denominational burial ground was planned in the rural cemetery style that became popular in the mid-1800s and was sited at what was then the outskirts of the city. The city established it in 1867 when it purchased 23 acres from H. B. Sawyer for $3,500 (about $65,000 in 2019), and in 1868 bought an additional seven acres from J. A. Arthur for $2,000 (about $38,000 in 2019).
From this high ground the cemetery overlooks Lake Champlain and sits near the current campus of Burlington High School. Nearby you can see the Louisa Howard Chapel, which the city rents for marriage ceremonies, funerals, memorial services, music recitals, and other functions. The day-to-day management by the city is supported by the Friends of Lakeview Cemetery, a group formed in the early 1990s to plan improvements and raise money to carry them out.
