Hannah Louisa Howard gave Burlington the Howard Mortuary Chapel at 455 North Avenue, built in 1882 on the grounds of Lakeview Cemetery. Built in 1882 and designed in the High Victorian Gothic style by Alfred Benjamin Fisher, this little stone building sits just south of the cemetery’s main entrance, near the road that runs between North Avenue and Burlington Bay. The cemetery grounds themselves were laid out by E. C. Ryer in 1871.
The chapel was given to the City of Burlington by Hannah Louisa Howard, daughter of hotelier John Howard and a noted local philanthropist, and it was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Take in the masonry: Monkton quartzite, known locally as redstone, cut with an ashlar finish and laid in courses, set off by gray limestone trim. Look for the Gothic details — buttresses, lancet-arched windows, and the steeply pitched purple slate roof.
