Champlain College began in 1878 as Burlington Business School, here in Burlington, Vermont. Founded in 1878 by G.W. Thompson as Burlington Business School to prepare young men for "the business cares and responsibilities of life," this institution has transformed repeatedly. In 1884 E. George Evans acquired the school, made it coeducational, and renamed it Queen City Business College.
The school moved to Bank Street in 1905 and to Main Street in 1910. In 1920 A. Gordon Tittemore acquired it and called it Burlington Business College. In 1958 it took on the name Champlain College and moved to its present location in the Hill Section of Burlington; that year it offered associate degree programs and enrolled about 60 students.
Dormitory life began with Jensen and Sanders Halls in 1965. Today Champlain operates on-campus undergraduate programs and online undergraduate courses through Champlain College Online, alongside online certificates, degree programs, and master's programs in over 80 subject areas. On its Burlington campus Champlain enrolls 3,060 undergraduate students from 40 states and 18 countries.
