Here at the northern tip of Main Street, a grassy rise opens into Agamont Park, Bar Harbor's own window onto Maine. Here at the northern end of the town's Main Street, where it meets West Street, the park perches on a hill that gives you a broad 180-degree panorama to the northwest, north, northeast, east and southeast — take in Mount Desert Narrows, Frenchman Bay and its islands. It is no surprise this is a popular viewing point for visitors.
The entrance from Newport Drive, off Main Street, is marked by a water fountain designed by Eric Sodderholtz; Newport Drive takes its name from the Newport House hotel that stood just south of the park between 1869 and 1938. This grassy rise also stands on the former site of Agamont House. You may recall a moment in October 2013 when national attention came here after the town council voted to remove a Wreaths Across America display that had been in the park since July 2011.
Today locals recommend this spot to watch the Fourth of July fireworks each year, and the park even offers free Wi-Fi. Beside you the Shore Path begins at Ells Pier and runs south along the shore of Frenchman Bay for about 0.7 miles (1.1 km). Beyond the grass, Frenchman Bay stretches wide, its scattered islands holding the horizon.
