Thalhimer's is what many called the Sosnik-Morris-Early Commercial Block, a pair of 1929 commercial buildings in Winston-Salem. Built in 1929, these two neighbors once housed the Morris-Early furniture store and Sosnik's clothing store, and both display elements of the popular Art Deco style you can still read in their surfaces. To your left is the Morris-Early building: four stories of brickwork warmed by terra cotta ornament and the distinctive cable molding that frames its elevations.
To your right sits Sosnik's: a three-story, nine-bay by ten-bay limestone-faced block whose heavier stone gives it a different kind of presence. In 1949 the Sosnik's building was extensively renovated by Raymond Loewy Associates, a change that followed the merger of Sosnik's and Thalhimers. A decade later, in 1958, Thalhimer's acquired the Morris-Early store for further expansion, knitting these two buildings together in the life of the city.
The block’s historic importance was recognized when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Picture the terra cotta details, the cable molding, and the limestone face meeting at this shared block.
