Busch Stadium is home to the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball history. The Cardinals have won eleven World Series championships — second only to the New York Yankees — and this franchise has given the game some of its greatest players: Stan 'The Man' Musial, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Albert Pujols, and many more. Stan Musial played 22 seasons in a Cardinals uniform, never playing for another team, and retired in 1963 with a .331 lifetime batting average.
The current Busch Stadium opened in 2006, replacing the circular concrete stadium of the same name that opened in 1966. The new park was designed to frame the Gateway Arch from within the stands — on a clear day, from the right field upper deck, you can see that silver curve rising above the skyline. Baseball in St. Louis is not merely a sport — it is a civic religion.
