Picture a Texas brewery reborn into one of modern American history's most celebrated redevelopment projects. In 1883, the San Antonio Brewing Association established a brewery on this site along the San Antonio River. The brand became Pearl Beer, a Texas institution that sold tens of millions of cases of lager across the Southwest for more than a century.
At its peak, the Pearl complex was a city within a city, with its own ice plant, bottling works, stables, and cooperage. The brewery survived Prohibition by producing near-beer and ice. But changing tastes and competition from national brands proved insurmountable.
The last batch of Pearl Beer was brewed in 2001. The complex sat vacant for years. Then, starting around 2009, the Emma and Silver Ventures development group began a meticulous conversion that preserved the original 1880s and early 1900s brewery buildings while adding residential units, a hotel, the Culinary Institute of America's San Antonio campus, a weekend farmers market, and dozens of restaurants and boutiques.
The brick vaults and steel tanks have become dining rooms and event spaces. The Pearl is proof that the most interesting future for a city often runs straight through its past.
