Picture twenty nations gathering here for the six-month World's Fair of 1968. The fair's theme was 'Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas,' a grand idea meant to honor San Antonio's unique position as a city where Spanish, Indigenous, European, and Anglo cultures had met and mingled for 250 years. Twenty nations participated, and nearly seven million visitors attended.
But to build the fairgrounds, the city demolished approximately 160 acres of older neighborhoods — displacing thousands of residents, many of them low-income Mexican-American families who had little political recourse. The urban renewal controversy became a defining moment for civic activism in San Antonio. The legacy is genuinely mixed: the fair brought investment, infrastructure, and international attention that helped modernize the city.
The park that remains has been redesigned in recent years with new playgrounds, pools, and cultural spaces. But the ghost of what stood here before — the homes, the streets, the community — is part of this ground's story too. HemisFair was San Antonio dreaming big, and learning the cost of that ambition.
