In 1718, Spanish settlers began digging the Acequia Madre — the Mother Ditch — the engineering backbone of colonial San Antonio. The Spanish understood from the beginning that survival in this semi-arid landscape required water management, and they imported a technology perfected over centuries in the dry regions of Spain and North Africa: the acequia. In 1718, within the first years of the settlement's founding, the Spanish began digging the first acequia channels from the headwaters of the San Antonio River, routing water to the Alamo mission complex.
Over the next several decades, five separate acequia systems were constructed to serve the mission chain, each with its own dam, main channel, and network of distribution ditches. The water flowed by gravity alone, carefully graded over miles of hand-dug earthen channels. The acequia system irrigated thousands of acres of farmland along the San Antonio River valley, supporting a mission population of thousands.
It enabled corn, beans, cotton, sugar cane, and livestock to thrive on the Texas frontier. Most of the original acequia system was buried or obliterated as the city grew. But segments survive — including the still-functioning Espada Aqueduct downstream — and archaeologists continue to uncover traces of the mother ditch beneath the modern city.
