Your eye rests on the largest Latter-day Saint temple by floor area, dedicated in Utah in 1893. This temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated in 1893 after a construction period of 40 years. It was the sixth temple completed by the church and the fourth built since the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois in the 1840s.
At 382,207 square feet (35,508.2 m2), it is the largest Latter-day Saint temple by floor area and serves as the centerpiece of the 10-acre Temple Square. The church and its members consider this building sacred, and a temple recommend is required to enter, so there are no public tours inside the temple as there are for other adjacent buildings on Temple Square. The temple was closed in 2019 for remodeling, which includes a seismic retrofit of the structure.
The church plans public open house tours of the newly renovated building in 2027; after those tours the temple will be dedicated for worship services. Photographs of the interior were first published in 1912 in James E. Talmage’s The House of the Lord, and various photographs have appeared since. Beyond this sacred building, the 10-acre Temple Square holds other structures that welcome you inside for a tour.
