Olympic Legacy Plaza opened in 2001 in The Gateway, in Salt Lake City, Utah, ahead of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It opened in 2001, built and unveiled ahead of the 2002 Winter Olympics, intended as a civic focal point for that moment. At the center is a large fountain that shapes the sound and rhythm of the space; flanking the pool are walls punched with inscriptions that display the names of Team 2002 volunteers, a literal roll call of the people who helped stage the Games.
Nearby, the work titled Go for the Gold is installed in the plaza, another visual anchor referencing that Olympic moment. The plaza was partly paid for through a "buy a brick" program, a community fundraising approach that left physical traces in the paving and walls. As you stand here, you can read the names, feel the spray from the fountain on a warm day, and imagine the surge of visitors during the Games it was made to welcome.
Built partly brick by brick through public donations, this plaza still lets you read the names of every Team 2002 volunteer inscribed in its walls.
