At 1119 Second Street, in Old Sacramento State Historic Park, you face the former home of the California State Military Museum. This was the State of California's official military museum, begun in 1991 during the administration of Governor Pete Wilson. Eleven years later Governor Gray Davis made it a permanent museum under the California State Military Department with permanent funding, and on 13 July 2004 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared it the State's official Military Museum.
The museum highlights contributions of individuals and units from California in the U.S. military across many operations and wars. In 2011, in collaboration with the California Department of Veteran Affairs and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, guest curator Natalia Visante helped create themed exhibitions showcasing various military units. Beyond this main location, the institution extends to five satellite museums, with sites at Camp Roberts in southern Monterey County, Camp San Luis Obispo, the Fresno Air National Guard Base, and the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base in Orange County.
