Locals call Richmond Main Street Station The Clock Tower, officially the Main Street Station and Trainshed. Built in 1901, this historic railroad station and office building is served by Amtrak, and functions as an intermodal station with the city's transit bus services run by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC). Locally it is affectionately called The Clock Tower.
The building's significance was recognized when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and elevated to a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1976. Today Main Street Station operates as a secondary train station for Richmond, providing limited Amtrak service directly to downtown. Several Amtrak trains serving the Richmond metropolitan area instead stop only at the primary rail station, Staples Mill Road, located five miles to the north in Henrico County.
At Main Street Station three daily Northeast Regional trains serve the station: two of them originate or terminate at Newport News, while the other originates or terminates here at Richmond Main Street Station. Northbound trains from this stop provide direct service to Union Station in Washington, Pennsylvania Station in New York, and South Station in Boston, among other stops.
