Hollywood Cemetery sits on high ground in the Oregon Hill neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1847 and designed by the landscape architect John Notman, this 135-acre (55 ha) rural cemetery sits on high ground and overlooks the James River. Walk these shaded paths and you move through layers of national history: Hollywood is the burial place of Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, and is one of only three places in the United States that contain the remains of two U.S. Presidents, the others being Arlington National Cemetery and United First Parish Church.
Because Richmond served as capital of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, the cemetery holds many Confederate government officials, including President Jefferson Davis and Secretary of War James A. Seddon. You will also find the graves of 25 Confederate States Army officers, among them generals J. E. B. Stuart, Fitzhugh Lee, and George Pickett, and the remains of over 11,000 Confederate soldiers. Their sacrifice is marked by the Monument of the Confederate War Dead, a 90-foot (27 m) granite pyramid built in 1869.
