Founded as the North Carolina Historical Commission in 1903, the State Archives of North Carolina keeps the state's historically significant records here at 109 East Jones Street. This is the state agency charged with collecting, preserving, and providing public access to historically significant archival materials relating to North Carolina, and with offering guidance on the preservation and management of public government records to state, county, city, and state university officials. Since May 2012 it has been known as the Division of Archives and Records within the North Carolina Department of Natural & Cultural Resources' Office of Archives and History. Inside, the work is organized into four sections you can imagine at work right now: Collection Services, Government Records, Digital Services, and Special Collections. The State Archives also serves the public beyond this address through the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo and the Western Regional Archives in Asheville, and all three locations are open to the public.
