One Financial Plaza

Downtown Providence · International-style downtown landmark

What you'll hear here: about a minute of narration about One Financial Plaza, and how it fits Downtown Providence, written to be listened to on the spot rather than read at home.

Known to many as the Sovereign Bank Tower or the Hospital Trust Tower, your One Financial Plaza rises on Kennedy Plaza in Downtown Providence. Designed by John Carl Warnecke & Associates, it reads as a clean rectangular prism with beveled vertical edges; its facade is clad in pre-cast concrete and travertine. A wide masonry cap crowns the tower, surrounded by lights that glow white at night and shift to green and red for Christmas, red for Valentine’s Day and Saint Joseph’s Day, and green for Saint Patrick’s Day.

Atop the roof sits the highest helicopter pad in the state of Rhode Island. Built to house the institution responsible for funding Rhode Island Hospital, it stands adjacent to the original Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building and holds the place of second-tallest structure in the city and state, surpassed in height only by the Industrial National Bank Building. Standing here in Kennedy Plaza you get the sense of restrained modern ambition: materials, proportions, and civic purpose.

Notice that masonry cap, the color-changing lights, and the helipad crowning the plaza and skyline beyond it.
