Clinton Street, where you are now, is the quieter, more residential layer beneath Portland's celebrated food scene. Clinton Street runs parallel to Division, one block south, through the same Southeast neighborhoods, and it catches the overflow from Division's restaurant density while maintaining a distinctly residential character. The Clinton Street Theater, which has screened the Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight every Saturday since 1978 — one of the longest-running midnight showings in the world — sits on this block as an artifact of the neighborhood's alternative culture roots.
The food carts and restaurants that fill the Division Street corridor have their supporting infrastructure here: the apartment buildings where the cooks live, the corner stores where they shop, the parks where their children play. Clinton Street also feeds into Division, making this the boundary zone between Portland's food tourism geography and its working residential geography. The Ladd's Addition neighborhood begins just east of here, and the contrast between the circular, planned serenity of that neighborhood and the straight commercial grid of Clinton and Division captures something essential about how Portland's southeast works: layers of planning and accident, intention and improvisation, stacked on top of each other in blocks.
