Since 1993 the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum has run its 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway, reporting mark MNGX, from the former Portland Company Marine Complex in front of you. Operating out of the former Portland Company Marine Complex since it was founded in 1993, the museum's collection gathers passenger and freight equipment and artifacts from the 2 ft lines that ran across Maine in the late 19th century and early 20th century. A 1+1⁄2-mile (2.4 km) railroad runs right along the waterfront of Casco Bay, closely paralleling Portland's Eastern Promenade, and you can still imagine historic steam and diesel locomotives and a variety of restored coaches pulling passenger services along this route.
Plans in 2014 to move the equipment and build a new depot in Gray never came to fruition, and the museum chose to remain here in Portland. In 2021 several of the steam locomotives were on long-term loan at the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway. More recently, in mid-January 2025 the railroad was shut down for several months as tracks were ripped up.
