Ahead of you Portola Avenue crosses El Paseo, a mile from where the street began at Highway 74. The galleries thin out here and the street hands back to offices, restaurants, and the ordinary business of a city that has to work in August as well as February. That is worth noticing on the way out.
Palm Desert was laid out in 1946 as a speculative desert town, incorporated in 1973, and had grown past fifty thousand people by the 2020 census; El Paseo is the part of it built to be looked at, and it is roughly one mile long. The rest of the city is the part that made the mile possible. Portola Avenue runs north from here toward the civic centre and the college, and south toward the Santa Rosa Mountains, and either direction takes you out of the exhibition and back into the town.
Turn, and the mile runs back west to the highway.
