Eastern Virginia Medical School, part of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, spreads its campus out around where you are. This public medical school in Norfolk is operated by Old Dominion University and was born of grassroots efforts across the southeastern part of Virginia known as Hampton Roads. Historically EVMS did not belong to an undergraduate institution, so it coordinates training through multiple medical centers across the Hampton Roads region.
Effective on July 1, 2024, Old Dominion University merged with EVMS to create a comprehensive university, with EVMS serving as the medical school component of the larger university. On this campus you will find Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the region’s only tertiary level 1 trauma medical care facility, and the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a regional pediatric referral care facility and the only stand-alone children's hospital in the state. EVMS also holds a place in medical history as the first institution in the United States to have produced a viable fetus through in vitro fertilization.
