Inside the Newport Casino you find the International Tennis Hall of Fame. This is a place that honors players and contributors to the sport of tennis and operates as a non-profit with the goal of preserving, celebrating, and inspiring the sport around the world. The complex you face began life when James Gordon Bennett Jr. commissioned it in 1879 as part of an exclusive resort, and it was designed by Charles McKim with interiors by Stanford White in the Victorian Shingle Style.
It was here that the U.S. National Championships — established in 1881 — found their original home, and that same year the Real Tennis Court, housing the National Tennis Club, and the Casino Theatre were part of the site. Today the campus contains a museum and an array of courts: 13 grass tennis courts, an indoor facility with three courts, three outdoor hard courts, one green clay court, a court tennis facility, and a theatre. Since 1976 the complex has hosted the Hall of Fame Open each July.
