Christ Church, at 70 Broadway, is an Episcopal parish completed in 1898 to Henry Vaughan's design as an Anglo-Catholic offshoot of Trinity Church on the Green. This is an Anglo-Catholic congregation with a strong focus on urban ministry; the parish began as an offshoot from New Haven’s Trinity Church on the town green. The stone building before you was completed in 1898 and was designed by architect Henry Vaughan.
It became notable enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, and its central location near downtown makes it something of a local landmark. Vaughan personally chose the artists who created the beautiful interior; Bavarian-born Johannes Kirchmayer executed the intricate wood carving you can still admire. Look around and you’ll see a stone tower modeled on the tower of Magdalen College, Oxford.
The congregation reported 207 members in 2015 and 243 members in 2023, with no membership statistics reported in 2024 parochial reports. Plate and pledge income reported for 2024 was $284,835 with an average Sunday attendance of 106 persons, down from an ASA of 188 in 2018.
