Central Station Hotel occupies the historic Memphis Central Station, which opened in 1914 and served as the gateway through which Memphis met the world for half a century. This Beaux-Arts railroad terminal was the arrival point for millions of travelers, migrants, soldiers, and dreamers. During the Great Migration — the mass movement of Black Southerners to northern cities between 1910 and 1970 — this station saw waves of people departing Memphis for Chicago, Detroit, and New York, carrying their music, their culture, and their hopes for a better life.
The blues traveled north in the baggage of those passengers and became Chicago blues, which became rock and roll. The station fell into disuse as train travel declined and sat vacant for decades until a stunning renovation transformed it into a boutique hotel in 2018. The grand waiting room with its soaring ceilings and arched windows is now a restaurant and bar.
The original ticket windows and departure boards have been preserved. You can almost feel the weight of the departures that shaped American culture, all those lives in motion passing through this room.
