Binghamton, the East Memphis neighborhood you have reached, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades through one of the most ambitious community development efforts in the city's history. Binghamton was a middle-class neighborhood for much of the twentieth century, home to working families who lived near the industrial and commercial corridors of East Memphis. As those economic anchors declined, the neighborhood deteriorated — by the 1990s it was among the most distressed communities in the city, marked by poverty, vacancy, and disinvestment.
The Binghamton Development Corporation, founded in 1993, began the slow work of rebuilding: constructing affordable housing, organizing residents, establishing a community garden, and creating economic opportunities from the ground up.
